Before I enroll in the lecture of Structure and Grammar of English, I wondered, ‘What will be teaching in the grammar class?’ ‘Is it same as we had learnt in primary school?’ I was looking forward to the coming lesson.
In the very first lecture, the lecturer introduced herself to us. She is Ms. Cheng. She wears a pair of spectacles and she is pregnant. My initial impression of her was strict. What first attracted me to her is her standard enunciation with powerful voice. I have enjoyed in her lecture and yet learning from her is a real pleasure.
‘What is grammar?’ A simple question was asked that I have never thought about and even tried to know. ‘Grammar is that something that young people today are not taught properly at school.’ Ms. Cheng showed that in the slide. This reminds me of that I had learnt not a thorough knowledge of the grammar in school before. In the past, teachers did not emphasize grammar enough. Hence, my problem is I do not even use grammar properly in my daily life.
After six weeks of learning, I found that parts of speech are interesting. Our language has around millions distinct words. Amazingly, grammar can be divided into just eight kinds of word. They are the verb, the noun, the pronoun, the adjective, the adverb, the preposition, the conjunction, and the interjection. We use different types of word to build a sentence because each type of word has its own function. We do use parts of speech in both writing and speaking to make meaningful communication.
I take the view that grammar is very important in our daily life. For instance, it is ridiculous that people who do not use grammar and said, ‘she were in school’. In short, we can not talk without using grammar. Besides, I find it absolutely a fascinating subject.
